The best iPhone tricks you didn’t know existed
Shake to undo
We’ve all been there where you’ve spent ages typing a long sentence and accidentally deleted it, or made some other disastrous error. Well, no need to panic! You can give your iPhone a shake to bring up the undo/redo dialogue box. So get shaking – this does actually work – try it for yourself!
Low Power Mode to save battery
If your iPhone battery is draining quickly and you need it to last then switch to Low Power Mode.
Overall the iPhone will work as normal and the battery will last significantly longer (however you may not get a social media message unless you check for it).
You can enable Low Power Mode in 3 simple steps:
1) Settings
2) Battery
3) Low Power Mode
Low power mode reduces consumption:
- The screen will go dark after a short period of inactivity
- It turns off some iPhone features including Hey Siri
- Mail fetches less frequently (push is turned off)
- Background app refresh is turned off and some visual effects are reduced
Get your iPhone’s flash to blink when you get a message
If you find that the vibration or sound that your phone makes when you get a message is not always enough to attract your attention, there’s another element that you can add to the alert: light.
This means each time you get a notification, the flash next to your iPhone’s rear-facing camera will blink.
To set this up follow these steps:
1) Settings
2) General
3) Accessibility
4) Scroll down to the ‘Hearing’ section
5) Turn on ‘LED Flash for Alerts’
Ask Siri to work out your mathematical calculations
Siri is on-hand to help with equations, simple or complex. Siri can add, subtract, multiply, divide and also calculate more complicated calculations!
All you need to do is open Siri and recite your equation. If the equation is complex it’s best to speak at a slightly slower pace so that Siri doesn’t become confused. We’ve tested Siri ourselves with some complicated equations and it has proven successful!
Enable Night Shift
Night Shift is a useful feature which dims the white tones on your screen, making it easier on your eyes in low-light conditions. No need to squint your eyes anymore if you’ve gone to check your phone during the night or early hours of the morning.
1) Settings
2) Display & Brightness
3) Select Night Shift
4) Edit the times accordingly
Allow your iPhone to read out your texts
This is a really useful feature if you have a long text message or want to listen to a text whilst in hands-free mode when driving.
Here’s how to set up your iPhone to read your text messages:
1) Settings
2) General
3) Accessibility
4) Speech
5) Tap on the button next to ‘Speak Selection’ (once the button has been toggled and it goes from grey to green this means the feature has been enabled).
Open up your messages and the text message and hold down/ long press on the speech bubble within your Messages, an option will appear saying ‘Speak’
See when a message was sent or received
This can be useful in many circumstances. Within Messages swipe from right to left to reveal the timestamps of each individual message.
