Why does my laptop screen keep flashing?
“It’s fine for an hour, then it starts flickering. Then it’s fine again.”
Intermittent faults are the most frustrating kind, because the moment you take the machine to someone, it behaves perfectly. It’s also one of the more common things people bring into the workshop, and the good news is that the most likely causes are among the cheaper ones to put right.
The four usual suspects
A flashing or flickering screen almost always comes down to one of these, and they’re worth knowing apart because the cost difference between them is considerable.
1. A loose or worn display cable
The cable running from the motherboard to the screen passes through the hinge, which means it flexes every single time you open and close the lid. Over several years that takes its toll.
The giveaway: the flickering changes when you move the screen. Open the lid to a different angle and it stops, or starts. If you can make it happen on demand by tilting the screen, this is very likely your problem — and it’s usually a straightforward fix.
2. A failing backlight
If the screen flickers and sometimes goes very dim — but you can still just about make out the image if you shine a torch at it — the backlight is the likely culprit rather than the panel itself.
3. Graphics drivers or settings
Not every flickering screen is a hardware fault, and this is the one worth ruling out before you spend anything. A driver that’s out of date, or a refresh rate set wrongly after an update, can produce exactly the same symptom.
It costs nothing to check, so it’s the first thing we look at.
4. The graphics chip itself
Less common, more serious. If the flickering comes with strange colours, distorted patterns, or lines across the display, the graphics hardware may be failing. On some machines this is fixable; on others it means the motherboard, which changes the economics considerably.
What you can check before bringing it in
Two quick tests that genuinely help us, and that you can do in five minutes.
Move the lid. Slowly tilt the screen through its full range. If the flickering starts or stops at particular angles, that’s the cable, and it’s useful to know before we open anything.
Plug in an external monitor or TV if you have one. If the external display is perfectly steady while the laptop screen flickers, the fault is in the screen, the cable or the backlight — not the graphics chip. If both flicker, it’s the graphics side. That single test rules out half the possibilities.
Note down roughly when it happens, too. Only when warm? Only on battery? Only after it’s been on a while? Intermittent faults are much easier to pin down with that sort of detail than without it.
What it tends to cost
This is why the distinction matters. A driver problem costs nothing but a bit of time. A display cable is typically a modest repair. A screen replacement starts from £72. A failed graphics chip on an older machine can be the point at which we tell you it isn’t worth it.

Is it safe to keep using?
Generally yes, in the sense that a flickering screen won’t damage your files. It’s an irritation rather than an emergency.
The one caveat: if the flickering is getting steadily worse, a display cable that’s fraying will eventually fail completely, and you’ll be left with a blank screen at an inconvenient moment. If it’s deteriorating week by week, it’s worth dealing with before it goes altogether.
And as always — if you don’t have a backup, make one. Not because a flickering screen threatens your data, but because it’s a good prompt.
