    Dating apps based on profile matching work on the basis of algorithms that analyze the matches in profiles. This is how eHarmony finds matches for its users.

    Traditional dating apps are essentially mobile versions of dating sites that copy their functionality. For example, “OKCupid” was originally a dating site and then released an app.

    Niche dating apps target specific groups of people. For example, “The League” is a prototype dating app that is “elitist” and only allows selected people to register, favoring those with advanced degrees and career-oriented young professionals. The idea behind the “League” is that people tend to start relationships with people from their own social stratum. The application allows white-collar workers – for example, doctors, lawyers – to register in the initial selection process.

    Other niche dating apps market themselves as being female-friendly (like “The Grade”). They are focused on protecting their female users from harassment.

    There are many unusual niche dating apps out there like Bristlr. It’s a dating app advertised as “connecting those with beards with those who want to stroke their beards.”

    Major players in the dating app market

    The American holding “Match Group” is the leader in the world market. The company owns the apps Tinder, Match.com, Meetic, OkCupid, Hinge, PlentyOfFish, Ship, and OurTime. Tinder is the most profitable dating app. Tinder earns $68.5 million a year. Approximately 40 percent of Tinder’s revenue comes from the US. It is followed by Japan (6%) and the UK (5%), which was in second place a few months ago.

    In July 2020, “Bumble”, founded by a former Tinder employee, came in second place with a gross revenue of over $16.8 million. About 74% of Bumble’s revenue comes from the US, 7% from the UK. The next in the ranking are “Pairs”, “MeetMe” and “Badoo”.
